AdBlue / SCR Diagnostics & Solutions

AdBlue and SCR faults can cause warning lights, limp mode, failed dosing, NOx sensor faults and even a “no restart” countdown.

Precision Remaps UK combines manufacturer-level diagnostics, live-data analysis and professional ECU programming equipment to establish the actual cause before recommending repair, programming or an appropriate specialist calibration solution.

UNDERSTANDING THE SYSTEM

What Causes AdBlue & SCR Problems?

An SCR warning does not automatically mean the AdBlue tank, pump or NOx sensor needs replacing. Several different faults can produce almost identical dashboard warnings.

01

What is AdBlue / SCR?

AdBlue is a urea-based fluid used by the Selective Catalytic Reduction system to reduce NOx emissions.

The ECU monitors dosing, pressure, temperature, NOx values, fluid information and other operating conditions to verify correct SCR operation.

02

Typical Symptoms

  • AdBlue / SCR warning light
  • Engine-management light
  • No-restart countdown
  • Limp mode or reduced performance
  • Warning returning after topping up
  • Repeated SCR-related fault codes
03

Typical Causes

  • Blocked or crystallised dosing injector
  • AdBlue pump or pressure faults
  • Upstream / downstream NOx sensor faults
  • Tank, level or quality sensor issues
  • AdBlue heater faults
  • Wiring, supply or CAN communication faults
04

Why Diagnosis Matters

Replacing a component simply because its name appears in a fault-code description can become expensive very quickly.

✓ Stored DTCs ✓ Freeze-frame data ✓ Live-data analysis ✓ Pressure testing ✓ Sensor plausibility ✓ Electrical checks
DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE LIBRARY

Common AdBlue & SCR Fault Codes

These are some of the SCR, reductant-pressure and NOx-sensor faults we regularly investigate. The exact diagnostic meaning can vary slightly by manufacturer and ECU strategy.

P20EE SCR

SCR NOx Efficiency Below Threshold

The ECU has detected that the SCR system is not reducing NOx emissions to the expected level.

Common direction: NOx sensor plausibility, dosing, injector condition, crystallisation, exhaust leaks or SCR efficiency.
P204F SYSTEM

Reductant System Performance

A general SCR-system performance fault where the ECU cannot confirm correct reductant-system operation.

Common direction: Pump pressure, dosing control, electrical supply, sensors or system adaptation.
P20E8 PRESSURE

Reductant Pressure Too Low

The AdBlue system cannot achieve or maintain the pressure required for correct dosing.

Common direction: Weak pump, restriction, filter, pressure sensor, leakage or electrical supply fault.
P207F QUALITY

Reductant Quality Performance

The vehicle believes the AdBlue / DEF quality or resulting SCR performance is outside the expected range.

Common direction: Fluid contamination, concentration, quality data or associated SCR faults.
U029D COMMS

Lost Communication With NOx Sensor

The vehicle has lost communication with a NOx sensor module or its associated electronics.

Common direction: Sensor power, earth, wiring, connector condition, water ingress or CAN communication.
P229F NOx

NOx Sensor Range / Performance

The NOx sensor is communicating but the reported value is outside the range the ECU considers plausible.

Common direction: Sensor degradation, wiring, contamination or implausible exhaust readings.
P2202 NOx

NOx Sensor Circuit Low

The control module is detecting an abnormally low electrical signal from the NOx-sensor circuit.

Common direction: Short to ground, wiring, connector, sensor supply or sensor electronics.
P2203 NOx

NOx Sensor Circuit High

The NOx-sensor circuit is reporting a voltage or signal above the expected electrical range.

Common direction: Open circuit, wiring fault, connector damage or failed sensor electronics.
P202A HEATER

Reductant Heater Performance

The ECU has detected incorrect performance from the AdBlue / DEF heating system.

Common direction: Heater element, wiring, connector, control output or temperature response.
P2BA9 SCR

NOx Exceedance / Reductant Quality

Excessive NOx has been detected together with insufficient reductant or SCR-system performance.

Common direction: AdBlue quality, NOx sensors, dosing, exhaust leakage or SCR performance.

A fault code is a diagnostic direction — not a parts diagnosis.

The same code can be caused by several different faults. We assess DTCs alongside freeze-frame information, live data, pressure readings, electrical supply, sensor plausibility and system behaviour before recommending work.

DIAGNOSTICS FIRST

How We Diagnose an AdBlue Fault

Our workflow is designed to establish the actual cause and avoid unnecessary parts replacement.

1

Full Vehicle Scan

Read the relevant engine, SCR and emissions-related control modules rather than relying on one stored fault.

2

Analyse Live Data

Review NOx values, pressure, dosing information, temperatures and system status.

3

Confirm the Cause

Separate sensor, electrical, pump, injector, pressure and system-performance faults.

4

Choose the Correct Resolution

Once the cause is confirmed, we can recommend the appropriate repair, programming or specialist calibration route.

5

Verify the Result

Relevant data and adaptations are checked and the vehicle is re-tested to confirm normal operation.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

AdBlue & SCR Fault FAQs

Quick answers to some of the questions customers ask us most often before booking.

Will topping up AdBlue clear the warning?

Only if the warning is genuinely caused by a low fluid level. Pressure, NOx sensor, dosing, heater and SCR-efficiency faults will usually remain until the underlying problem is resolved.

Can you diagnose a no-start countdown?

Yes. The important step is establishing why the SCR system has activated the countdown rather than repeatedly clearing the warning without correcting the cause.

Does P20EE automatically mean the SCR catalyst has failed?

No. P20EE is an efficiency fault. NOx sensor plausibility, dosing, injector performance, exhaust leakage and other causes should be considered before condemning the catalyst.

Does U029D automatically mean I need a NOx sensor?

No. U029D is a communication fault, so sensor power supply, earth, wiring, connectors and CAN communication should also be checked.

Why does the warning come back after fault codes are cleared?

Clearing a DTC does not remove the condition that originally caused it. Once the ECU runs the relevant monitor again, an unresolved pressure, sensor, dosing or electrical fault can immediately return.

What information should I send you?

Send your vehicle registration, postcode, dashboard warning, diagnostic fault codes and details of any parts or repairs already carried out. Photos or screenshots are particularly useful.

Do you work on cars and vans?

Yes. Precision Remaps UK supports a wide range of diesel cars, vans and commercial vehicles. Send us the vehicle details and we can check coverage.

Do you provide mobile service?

Yes. We operate scheduled mobile routes around the UK. Availability depends on your location and the specific work required.
