Diagnostics First Existing gearbox, engine and drivetrain faults considered before calibration
ZF 6HP & 8HP Gearbox Tuning. Sharper Response. Better Torque Control. Smarter Shift Behaviour.
A transmission calibration changes how the gearbox manages torque, shift timing, converter lock-up, kickdown and driver requests. On the right vehicle it can make a substantial difference to response and drivability — particularly when the engine has already been remapped.
Precision Remaps UK supports a range of ZF 6HP and ZF 8HP applications across BMW, Jaguar, Land Rover, Audi and other supported platforms. Exact functions vary by vehicle, TCU and software version, so we identify the transmission before confirming the available stage and features.

Transmission Behaviour Is Software-Controlled.
Modern ZF automatics use their own control unit to manage allowed input torque, clutch pressure, converter lock-up, shift timing, kickdown and mode behaviour. Calibration can refine those strategies where the transmission and software support it.
Torque Limits
Supported transmission torque limiters can be aligned with the engine output where appropriate.
Shift Timing
Shift scheduling can be refined so the gearbox does not upshift or downshift unnecessarily.
Kickdown Behaviour
Pedal and kickdown response can be made more predictable on supported applications.
Converter Lock-Up
Lock-up strategy can affect response, heat and cruising behaviour depending on the gearbox.
Manual / Sport Modes
Manual-mode and Sport-mode behaviour can be altered where the specific TCU software allows it.
Shift Execution
Supported software can sharpen shift execution while retaining appropriate transmission protection.
6HP and 8HP Need to Be Identified Before We Quote Features.
The ZF family name does not tell us everything. Vehicle manufacturer, TCU generation, software version, engine torque and drivetrain configuration determine what can be changed.
ZF 6HP
Common across earlier BMW, Jaguar, Land Rover, Audi and other high-torque applications. Typical variants include 6HP19 / 6HP21 / 6HP26 / 6HP28 and related units.
Check my ZF 6HP →ZF 8HP
Used across a wide range of BMW, Jaguar Land Rover, Audi, Jeep and other applications. Common variants include 8HP45 / 50 / 70 / 75 / 76 and related transmission families.

These are gearbox-calibration prices including VAT. Not every TCU exposes the same configurable functions, so the stage description is applied to the supported features available on the exact transmission.
Daily Road Calibration
For drivers who want cleaner everyday gearbox behaviour without turning the vehicle into an aggressive performance setup.
- Transmission / TCU identification
- Supported torque-limit adjustment
- Shift scheduling refinement
- Manual / Sport behaviour where supported
- Post-programming fault check
Response Calibration
For drivers who want more decisive take-off, stronger response and a gearbox strategy better matched to a tuned engine or fast-road vehicle.
- Stage 1 functions where supported
- More assertive shift strategy
- Kickdown / response refinement
- Launch-related strategy where supported
- Torque strategy matched to engine output
High-Output Calibration
For higher-output or heavily modified vehicles where the gearbox calibration needs to be considered as part of the overall performance package.
- Higher supported torque allowance
- Performance-oriented shift strategy
- Faster shift execution where supported
- Engine / gearbox strategy reviewed together
- Exact price confirmed after TCU identification
ECU + Supported TCU Package
Combined engine and gearbox calibration for supported vehicles where the ECU tune and transmission strategy should be developed as one package.
- Stage 1 ECU calibration
- Supported TCU calibration
- Torque communication considered together
- Workshop package from £429
- Local mobile package from £449 where applicable
More Engine Torque Can Expose Stock Transmission Limits.
The engine ECU and transmission controller exchange torque information continuously. If the engine calibration requests more torque than the stock TCU strategy expects, the gearbox may intervene, request torque reduction or behave inconsistently.
That does not mean every Stage 1 engine tune needs a gearbox map. We identify the exact transmission, torque target and customer requirement before recommending TCU work.
View ECU remapping & package pricing →Engine torque request The ECU calculates and reports requested engine torque
Allowed input torque The transmission has its own limits and protection strategy
Torque reduction during shifts The TCU can request temporary torque intervention during gear changes
Matched strategy Supported ECU + TCU packages align the two systems where required
Not Just Performance Cars.
Transmission calibration can make sense for a tuned engine, a towing vehicle or simply a car whose factory shift strategy does not suit how it is driven.
Engine Remapped
Useful where additional engine torque approaches or exceeds the stock TCU strategy.
Towing / Load
Shift and converter strategy can be reviewed for vehicles regularly working under load.
High-Torque Diesel
3.0 diesel and similar high-torque platforms often benefit from coordinated ECU / TCU strategy.
Kickdown Delay
Supported software can make pedal and downshift response more predictable.
Gear Hunting
Shift scheduling can sometimes be refined where the factory strategy changes gear too frequently.
Fast-Road Use
Performance-oriented calibration can sharpen shift execution and mode behaviour where supported.
Software Will Not Repair a Worn Gearbox.
Existing transmission faults, clutch slip, adaptation problems, low fluid condition, overheating or mechanical wear should be diagnosed before calibration. Tuning is for a fundamentally healthy transmission.
TCU Fault Codes
Transmission and engine faults are checked before assuming behaviour is calibration-related.
Clutch / Converter Slip
Existing slip or flare needs mechanical diagnosis before additional torque is requested.
Fluid / Service History
Condition and service history matter, particularly on high-mileage or heavily loaded vehicles.
Temperature
Overheating or repeated temperature protection should be addressed before performance calibration.
Adaptation Behaviour
Unusual adaptation values or harsh shifts can indicate wear rather than a software problem.
Engine Condition
A gearbox cannot compensate for an engine with boost, fuelling or torque-control faults.
Identify. Check. Program. Verify.
Vehicle ID
Confirm model, engine, transmission and likely TCU family.
Fault Check
Review relevant engine and transmission faults before calibration.
TCU Support
Confirm available read / write route and supported functions.
Calibration
Apply the appropriate Stage 1, Stage 2 or Stage 3 gearbox strategy.
ECU Alignment
Engine torque strategy is considered where the vehicle is also remapped.
Verification
Re-scan and check post-programming behaviour before handover.
Adaptation & Supported Features Vary by Vehicle.
Some gearboxes continue to adapt shift behaviour over subsequent drive cycles after programming. We do not advertise a universal mileage figure because adaptation strategy varies by transmission, software and vehicle condition. Likewise, launch control, manual-mode behaviour and individual shift functions are only included where the exact TCU supports them.
Send the Registration. We’ll Identify the Gearbox & Available Tuning Level.
You do not need to know the exact ZF variant. Send the registration, current engine map status, any gearbox symptoms and your postcode. We can then check the transmission, TCU support and the appropriate tuning route.
